Though Zermatt is one of the few Alpine resorts where you can ski year-round (on the Theodul Glacier), there is still an official winter season when the bulk of the lifts, valley runs, and full resort services operate. Outside that main season, glacier lifts may still run, but many of the lower-altitude lifts and runs are closed (or in reduced service). Your best bet is to plan around the core winter window for full access and amenities.

When does the winter start?

  • For the 2025/26 season, the official winter season begins on 1 November 2025
  • The areas Sunnegga / Rothorn / Gornergrat at the end of the month on 29 November 2025 (subject to snow, the last couple of winters it’s been delayed by a week)

Key lift & piste opening notes

  • The runs to the village usually open after the official opening, once there is enough snow on htem
  • Hirli actually only opens on the 20th December 2025
  • Theodul Express only opens on the 20th December 2025

When does the winter end?

  • The official end of the 25/26 season is  3 May 2026
  • However Sunnegga / Rothorn / Gornergrat will close earlier on 20 April 2026
  • In practice, many lifts begin to shut down from April onward, though glacier and high-altitude lifts may still operate as conditions allow.
  • Because Zermatt offers year-round glacier access, technically there is no absolute “end” to skiing, but the full winter network winds down in late spring.
